Is Jennifer Aniston on the right track with Microneedling her face? ABSOLUTELY! I have had 4 treatments so far, 1 month apart at the plastic surgeon’s office I work for, Dr. Kristina Tansavatdi, in Westlake Village, California. Having suffered from cystic acne and used two rounds of accutane, I was left with acne scarring. More than 25 years ago, dermabrasion was performed on my skin, not to be confused with microdermabrasion. You are put to sleep to when dermabrasion is performed. I became an esthetician to help people with acne and problem skin, and to find help for myself. I have had countless peels, even fraxel laser on my skin. I have seen the biggest improvement in my acne scarring from the microneedling treatments I have had. I can finally say at age 60, I am happy with my skin.
Dr. Kristina Tansavatdi picked the Bellus
SkinPen II over the derma-roller because of its ability to be used on
smaller parts of the face, like the upper lip and right under the eyes.
The other advantage of the Bellus SkinPen II is the throw away needle
cartridge. No risk of blood contamination and having to clean the
needles to reuse the roller on someone else.
The SkinPen by Bellus Medical, Dallas, is a vertical microneedling
device with a cordless design that creates a series of hundreds of
vertical microscopic channels in the dermis using straight needles of
variable depth (0.25 to 2.5 mm) to penetrate at a 90o angle. The SkinPen
Advanced Microneedle Cartridge is a single-use disposable tip that
features a patented Bio-Sleeve technology to prevent
cross-contamination, an exhaust port to prevent suction and reduce risk
of broken capillaries, and 12 sterile 32-gauge medical-grade steel
needles.
How Dermal Microneedling Works
Our bodies have a natural repair and
healing process that reacts to injury by producing new collagen and
encouraging elasticity. Dermal microneedling initiates this injury
response by creating hundreds of temporary micro channels or openings in
the skin without any thermal energy or skin removal. In response, our
bodies lay down new collagen under the skin resulting in tightening of
the skin and smoothing of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars.
About Microneedling Treatments
Patients typically tolerate microneedling
treatments very well. Topical numbing creams are applied for 30 minutes
prior to treatments. Then the treatment usually takes about 45 minutes
to complete, depending on the areas to be treated. As there is trauma to
the skin, an antiviral may need to be prescribed if you are prone to
cold sores. Many report little or no discomfort during the procedure. We
will work with you to ensure your comfort during the procedure. This
procedure is minimally invasive; however, since the skin is being
penetrated there will be some side effects afterward. The more
aggressive the treatment, the more side effects.
What to Expect After Dermal Microneedling
Redness, swelling and tenderness may
follow the procedure but with little to no downtime. The following day
patients may return to work and resume normal activities. Most patients
are able to conceal any residual signs of the treatment with makeup.
Within days, there will be no evidence that any treatment was performed.
Typical post-treatment effects:
- Day 1: Mild to moderate swelling and redness. There may be some mild bruising as well.
- Day 2: Some persisting redness may be present, but all redness, bruising and swelling should be diminishing. One can apply makeup to cover any remaining redness.
- Day 3: Most redness, bruising and swelling should be nearly gone. Normal appearance with makeup may be achieved.
- Day 4: Skin appears mostly normal at this point with some minor swelling.
What Dermal Microneedling Can Do for You
Dermal microneedling is an excellent way
to achieve a smooth face. With this service, about a dozen fine needles
are used to penetrate deep beneath the skin’s surface to rebuild
elasticity, stimulate collagen, and reduce pore size. You can expect
acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles to diminish over a series of
treatments. For the best results, we recommend three to six sessions
depending on the problem we are addressing. Deeper lines require at
least six treatments while pigmentation or fine lines may require less.
Acne scars may take six sessions.
