Below is an excerpt taken from the January 2015 issue of "The Dermatologist" in an article titled Economic Burden of Skin Cancer Treatment Increasing:
"The average annual number of adults
treated for skin cancer increase from 3.4 million in 2002-2006 to 4.9
million in 2007-2011. During this period, the average annual total
costs for skin cancer increased from $3.6 billion to $8.1 billion,
representing an increase of 126.2% while the average annual total cost
for all other cancers increased by 25.1%. During 2007-2011, nearly 5
million adults were treated for skin cancer annually."
Melanoma kills 1 US citizen per hour an
is the fastest growing cancer 6% per year. Some statistics say it is
the most common cancer in women ages 25 to 29 and #1 cancer killer in
women ages 30 to 35.
These findings highlight the importance
of skin cancer prevention efforts. Tanning beds are not an alternative
to tanning. Both UV-B and UV-A rays damage the skin and can lead to
skin cancer. Tanning salons use lamps that emit both UV-A and UV-B
radiation.
If you are out in the sun, be sure to
use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF30. As long as you reapply
every 1-1/2 to 2 hours you do not need more than an SPF30. There is
very little extra protection with a higher SPF. Make you use enough
sunscreen .
